Male elephant seals defend territory - David Attenborough - BBC wildlife (by BBCWorldwide)

Spending the last afternoon of freedom watching giant sacks of blubber flop around is immensely interesting and so hilarious.

“Cakes have gotten a bad rap. People equate virtue with turning down dessert. There is always one person at the table who holds up her hand when I serve the cake. No, really, I couldn’t she says, and then gives her flat stomach a conspiratorial little pat. Everyone who is pressing a fork into that first tender layer looks at the person who declined the plate, and they all think, That person is better than I am. That person has discipline. But that isn’t a person with discipline; that is a person who has completely lost touch with joy. A slice of cake never made anybody fat. You don’t eat the whole cake. You don’t eat a cake every day of your life. You take the cake when it is offered because the cake is delicious. You have a slice of cake and what it reminds you of is someplace that’s safe, uncomplicated, without stress. A cake is a party, a birthday, a wedding. A cake is what’s served on the happiest days of your life. This is a story of how my life was saved by cake, so, of course, if sides are to be taken, I will always take the side of cake.”

It was mostly a blur after leaving the noisy hall, until I cried in my block’s stairwell. But I still don’t really know what the tears are for.

After a couple of days, company of good friends, a great book (Born Free by Joy Adamson), I Not Stupid 1 and Too (somehow they still remain so tear-inducing), I guess I have accepted the fact of facing Chinese again for a year. But I can only find 1 other B3 kid taking accelerated H1MT D<

I was rereading the Memory Keeper’s Daughter by Kim Edwards the other day. David Henry’s obsession with the beauty of light felt so familiar, so relatable.
So I’ve decided to join photog.

Great Egret (Egretta alba)

On Sunday, I went to sungeibulohwetlandreserve alone for some birdwatching, and boy it was fun! And I learnt so much about the birds/photographing them <- which is damn hard

Little Egret (Egretta garzetta)

I’m a sucker for panned photos rather then freezeframe shots cos it shows more motion. But it is so terribly difficult to achieve and I’m already very proud of this imperfect picture.

Lesson 1: Bring a tripod

Occasionally when the whole flock takes flight, the little observational hut is filled with a symphony of consecutive shutter clicks. After a few seconds, it lapses back into a soothing calm.

Lesson 2: Always be ready and prime your focus. Then wait patiently but alertly.

There are loads of professionals with their huge lens and 123890x zoom binos who stay around all morning just waiting for the perfect shot. Their equipment and knowledge of everything is quite intimidating, but they are also very open and friendly, willing to let others peek through their binos and look at their photos.

Lesson 3: Don’t be shy, go up and make friends. They’re actually quite glad share.

… haha I have no idea which heron this is??

I met all kinds real friendly people. There was a artist sketching the mangrove landscape with charcoal…but had coloured chibi colourcloudpalace charaters in the foreground! And there was a pair of avid birdwatchers who allowed me to tag behind them as they spotted and identified all the birds just from its chirping!

Then it rained. Always prepare umbrella!!

Malayan water moniter(Varanus salvator)

Saw the usual suspects, got hungry, went home. The End!

Nothing like reconnecting with nature on the second day back! Went to bukitbatoknaturepark for a walk on Saturday and found my dear White-crested Laughing Thrushes (Garrulax leucolophus) instantly by their beautiful calls.
